WWF suggests that palm oil production is gradually moving towards more sutainable practices as 11%
global palm oil production was certified as sustainable in 2011 and this
percentage rose to 18% in 2014. One of the major hurdles is battling the rise of consumer demand for palm oil products alongside the increases in population and the changes in standards of living in developing nations.
The 10 member nations of ASEAN met in October and agreed to formulate a National Plan of Action, working towards the goal of becoming haze-free by 2020. Isolated efforts will not achieve the end goal and to make the region haze free, considerable coordination between stakeholders is necessary so that everyone is working towards the same goal. While the Indonesian government and Singaporean investors have started making small steps towards campaigning for production of sustainable palm oil, a coordination of efforts will be needed to help resolve the air pollution issue of the haze.
